When the Unexpected Becomes the Job
With the latest storm warnings in place, I’m reminded of a week when the weather took centre stage in my work. It’s a reminder that behind the scenes, when the unexpected happens, someone is still keeping everything on track.
When Weather Turns into Work
It’s easy to call it ‘just admin’ until you’re on a flight tracker watching a small plane circle an airport in 47-knot crosswinds, knowing a colleague is on board.
That Monday started at 5am with a flight cancellation. From there, it became a long day of rebooked travel, revised plans, and a steady flow of updates to keep everything moving. At one point, I was arranging hotel accommodation for a colleague whose flight was still in the air, knowing it might be diverted.
By 8pm, I was watching that same flight return to Edinburgh on the tracker after two missed approaches. It was nearly 10pm by the time everything had been followed up and accounted for.
Tuesday allowed for a later start, but was still a full day of rearranging transport and liaising with managers to reassess the schedule.
The Invisible Work That Holds It Together
None of this shows up on a timesheet. There’s no drop-down menu for “kept the week from unravelling.” But it’s the work that makes everything else possible.
Sometimes support looks like ordering stationery or keeping on top of invoices. And sometimes it looks like staying with the job until the people on the ground know where they’re going, where they’re sleeping, and what they’re doing next.
That part might not be visible. But it matters.
